Church of St Anne, Aigburth

The Church of St Anne stands on Aigburth Road in the Liverpool suburb of Aigburth. Built in 1836–37, it is an early example of Norman Revival architecture and is listed at Grade II*. The building is made of ashlar stone with a slate roof and features a west tower, a four-bay nave, north and south transepts, and a three-bay chancel. The tower has paired two-light bell openings, a cornice with corbels, and a parapet with blind arcading. The east window consists of three lancets and a rose window, while the west gallery and transept galleries remain intact. The church was founded by local merchants John Moss, Charles Stewart Parker, John Abraham Tinne, and Josias Booker and consecrated in 1837. In 1853–54, broad transepts were added and the chancel extended. The north and south galleries were removed in 1893–94, and the chancel was further extended in 1913–14. The church suffered damage during an arson attack by Suffragettes in December 1913, when the altar and choir stalls were burned. In January 2025, Pam Knowles set a Guinness World Record for the longest-serving Sunday School teacher, having taught at St Anne’s for over 73 years. Visitors find a west tower with a round-headed entrance, blind arcading, and a diapered gable above it. A clock face and a large rose motif sit above the entrance, and the tower’s paired two-light bell openings are visible on each face. The gate piers, listed at Grade II, are octagonal with arcading, corbels, and finials. The church adjoins St Margaret’s Church of England Academy and is used for carol and other services. The interior retains the west gallery and transept galleries, while the east window’s three lancets and rose window add to the Norman Revival style.
