Sefton Park
Sefton Park is a large public park in south Liverpool, covering 235 acres in a conservation district. It lies within the historic bounds of the former Royal Park, Toxteth Park, and is bordered by suburbs like Toxteth, Aigburth and Mossley Hill. The park was created from land once part of a 2,300-acre Royal Deer Park, which was ‘disparked’ in 1591. In 1867 the council bought 375 acres from the Earl of Sefton for £250,000 to develop a grand public space. Designed by French landscape architect Édouard André and Liverpool architect Lewis Hornblower, it opened in 1872. The park features circular paths, a 7-acre lake, follies, boathouses and Victorian lodges reflecting the city’s mid-Victorian grandeur. The park is worth visiting for its historic design and cultural role. It was one of the largest in a ‘ribbon of parks’ planned in the 1850s, alongside Newsham and Stanley Parks. Its layout was partly funded by selling housing plots around Prince’s Park, despite public criticism of the cost. The Palm House, a Grade II* conservatory opened in 1896, was restored after bomb damage and decades of neglect. It now houses exotic plants and statues of explorers and botanists. The park also hosted major events like the European Cross Country Championships trials and BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in 2025. Visitors find wide green spaces, a man-made lake with stepping stones, and the restored Palm House with its tiered dome and glasshouse interior. The Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain stands near the lake, topped by the Anteros statue. There are cricket pitches where W. G. Grace once played, tennis courts, a bowling green and jogging circuits. The park’s perimeter is lined with Victorian and Edwardian buildings, and the Peter Pan statue in the Palm House grounds recalls a gift from J. M. Barrie. Seasonal events include tea dances, jazz concerts and circus performances, making it a lively place year-round.
