Burg Arnstein

Burg Arnstein stands on a low hill twenty-one metres above sea level between the villages of Sylda and Harkerode south of Aschersleben. The site began as a medieval fortress in the 12th century and grew into a grand palas with tall towers visible across the Harz foothills. By the 19th century it had become a celebrated romantic ruin, drawing artists and visitors from far beyond the region. The castle belonged to the lords of Arnstein, a Swabian family who first took the name in 1156. Through marriage they allied with the Ascanians and Wettins, rising to the top ranks of Saxon nobility. After the family died out in 1615, the estate passed through several noble houses until it reached the Prussian crown in 1815. The last private owners, the Knigge family, began stabilising the ruins in the 19th century and opened the site to the public. Today the ruins show two round towers linked by curtain walls from the 12th-century phase. A four-storey Gothic hall tower was added around 1400, and in the 16th century the palas was raised by two floors. Visitors walk past the remains of the kitchen house and the spiral staircases that once served the great hall. The hilltop offers wide views over the surrounding farmland and the distant Harz ridges.
