Hatherley Brook

Hatherley Brook rises near Up Hatherley in Cheltenham and flows westwards, passing close to GCHQ before reaching the villages of Down Hatherley, Innsworth and Longford. Part of its course marks the boundary between Longford and Sandhurst, between Innsworth and Twigworth, and between Innsworth and Down Hatherley. The brook disappears into culverts beneath the A38, A40 and M5 motorways before re-emerging on its final stretch to the Severn. The Environment Agency keeps a close watch on water levels at Sandhurst to give early warnings of flooding. Its monitoring station there helps protect homes and roads along the brook’s route. The brook itself is a quiet tributary, but its behaviour matters to the communities it passes through. Visitors can follow the brook’s course through suburban Cheltenham and then through open countryside as it approaches the Severn. The changing landscape from town to village to riverbank offers a simple walk beside a modest waterway that quietly shapes the land it crosses.
