St Mary de Lode Church

St Mary de Lode Church stands just outside Gloucester Cathedral in Gloucestershire. It occupies a site long linked with water, as the name ‘Lode’ recalls a vanished ferry across a branch of the Severn. Beneath the nave lie the remains of Roman buildings, including a second-century baths and a timber mausoleum with three burials. Excavations show the church was rebuilt after fires and reused medieval walls, while a Norman tower of about 1190 still rises at its heart. The earliest written record of the church dates from the late eleventh century, when it had nave, chancel and tower. Local legend once claimed it as the burial place of King Lucius, first Christian king of Britain, though the tomb effigy in the chancel is fourteenth-century. The church’s architecture mixes periods clearly. James Cooke rebuilt the nave in 1826 with cast-iron columns in early Gothic Revival style, yet the central tower remains Norman. A Norman arch leads into the barrel-vaulted tower, which connects through a thirteenth-century arch to the vaulted chancel. The octagonal pulpit uses fifteenth-century carved panels, and an eighteenth-century organ was brought from St Nicholas, Westgate Street. Stained glass honours the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars and the poet Ivor Gurney. Outside, a monument marks the spot where Bishop John Hooper was burnt at the stake in Gloucester. Inside, the church continues to hold regular services and Sunday School, now sharing its parish with St Swithun’s and St Mary de Crypt. Concerts by the Gloucester Music Society take place here regularly. The Grade I listed building offers a quiet space beside the cathedral grounds, where Roman layers lie just below the floor and medieval arches frame modern worship.
