Winkelegg

The Winkelegg is a mountain summit in the Schobergruppe range of East Tyrol, Austria. It stands at 2,799 metres and forms part of the long northwest ridge of the Hochschobers. The peak lies between the Lärchetberg to the northwest and the Nördliche Wasserfallspitze to the southeast, separated by the small Wasserfallscharte col. To the southwest the Kreuzegg rises nearby, and together they enclose a trough valley that feeds the Staniskabach stream. On the west side the Fallwindestal valley begins, while to the east the Ralftal valley runs downhill. The Winkelegg sees few climbers and offers a quiet route for those seeking solitude. Walkers usually start from Elleparte in Unterlesach and follow a winding path up to the Fallwindeshütte hut. From there the trail follows the Fallwindesbach stream into the remote trough-shaped valley, a place seldom visited except by hunters. The route then turns west along the base of a scree slope below the col between Winkelegg and Kreuzegg. Finally a straightforward scramble up the northwest ridge leads to the summit. At the top visitors find wide views across the Schobergruppe’s jagged ridges and deep valleys. The Staniskabach valley lies below to the southwest, while the Fallwindestal drops away on the western side. To the east the Ralftal stretches out toward the village of Kals am Großglockner. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn, with room for a few people to stand and enjoy the quiet.
