Pfarrkirche Furth an der Triesting

The Catholic parish church of St Mary Magdalene stands in the centre of Furth an der Triesting, a village in the Baden district of Lower Austria. Built in the late 18th century as a low Baroque central structure, it is surrounded by the remains of the old cemetery wall. The church is listed as a protected monument and belongs to the Pottenstein deanery in the Vienna Woods vicariate of the Archdiocese of Vienna. The building replaced an earlier church destroyed in the Turkish wars of 1683 and rebuilt by Minorites from nearby Pottenstein. It became a parish church in 1782 after centuries as a branch of Pottenstein. The exterior combines a rectangular nave with a transverse oval dome and a lower choir, while the massive east tower dates from the 15th or 16th century. Inside, Franz Xaver Dobler’s 1795 ceiling paintings depict the four Latin doctors of the church on the pendentives and Christ with the woman taken in adultery in the dome. Visitors enter through the cemetery wall into a restrained central space where the dome rests on pendentives above a narrow lower gallery. The high altar from the early 19th century frames a classicist tabernacle, and a crucifix from the late 18th century hangs on the wall. Statues of the four Evangelists occupy the side conches, and Führich-style Stations of the Cross date from the mid-19th century. A 1946 organ by Johann M. Kauffmann and a bell cast by Josef Schweiger in 1834 complete the furnishings.
