Meyringer-Warte

The Meyringer-Warte is a wooden observation tower standing thirteen metres high on the Hocheck summit at 1,037 metres in the Gutenstein Alps. It sits on the municipal boundary between Furth an der Triesting and Altenmarkt an der Triesting in Lower Austria. The tower’s timber-frame construction blends with the surrounding forest and alpine meadows. The first lookout here opened in 1881 as the Franciska-Warte and was rebuilt twice before serving as a triangulation point from 1927. In the early 1960s the old tower was dismantled and later replaced in 1973–74 by the present structure. It was named after Franz Meyringer, long-serving chairman of the Triestingtal section of the Austrian Tourist Club and honorary member. From the viewing platform visitors see a wide circle of peaks: the Schneeberg, Rax, Ostrong, Ötscher, Gemeindealpe, Dürrenstein and Hochkar. On clear days the view stretches to the Little Carpathians and the Hungarian Plain. The short climb rewards walkers with sweeping alpine vistas framed by spruce and larch.
