Carnegie Castle

Carnegie Castle was a medieval fortress in the parish of Carmyllie, Angus. It stood near the old Carnegie farm, linked to the Carnegie family from the 15th to 18th centuries. The exact date of its construction remains unknown, though it is recognised as a medieval site. Historic records show the castle stood about 100 yards from the farmhouse in the late 19th century. Alexander Johnston Warden, a local historian, noted moss-covered ruins visible at the time. By 1903, Ordnance Survey maps still marked the site, but by 1966 only a flat field remained. Today the area is a registered archaeological site with no visible remains above ground. The foundations were disturbed by ploughing long ago, and some stones were reused in nearby farm buildings. The land shows no trace of the castle’s past, yet its history is preserved in records and local memory.
