Panmure Castle

A ruined medieval castle stands north-west of Muirdrum in Angus. Built about 1224 by Peter Maule, it was the stronghold of the Maule family for four centuries. The Second War of Scottish Independence ended its first life when Andrew Murray of Avoch and Petty destroyed it in 1336. The castle is remembered for a fatal stone-throwing in 1485, when Alexander Garden killed John Jamesone. James IV pardoned Garden twenty-two years later, showing how justice moved slowly in the 15th century. By the 17th century the Maule family had moved to Panmure House, leaving the old castle to crumble. Today the grassy mound and water-filled moat are protected as a Scheduled Monument. Visitors walk among broken walls that once rose three storeys high. The site offers quiet views across the surrounding farmland and a sense of how power shifted in medieval Angus.
