Ardestie Castle

Ardestie Castle stands in Monikie, Angus, as a late 15th-century L-plan tower house. It once commanded the landscape about 7.2 kilometres north of Monifieth. Only fragments of its foundations remain today. The site overlooks farmland and distant hills. Visitors can still trace the outline of the original structure. The castle’s design once resembled nearby Auchinleck and Hynd castles. It was evidently the largest of the three. The castle’s history centres on the Earls of Panmure, who lived there in the late 17th century. James Maule, the fourth and final Earl, was born in the castle in 1658. By 1853 the foundations were still visible, though little now survives. Much of the stone was taken to build farm buildings nearby. The castle’s importance faded once Panmure House was completed. Its story reflects the rise and fall of a noble family. A walk around the site reveals low stone walls and grassy mounds. The remains lie close to a quiet country lane. The open fields around the castle stretch to the horizon. There are no grand halls or towers left to explore. The remains are modest but evoke a strong sense of the past. The setting is peaceful, with few visitors and wide views. It offers a quiet place to reflect on history.
