M&D’s is an amusement park beside Strathclyde Park in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire. The park has two roller coasters, a water ride, fairground rides, an arcade, a theatre, Cosmic Bowl and Amazonia, Scotland’s only indoor rainforest. Travelling showmen Matthew and Douglas Taylor once owned most of the rides. In 2018 the council approved an expansion plan. The park entered administration in April 2020 and was bought two months later. The park is worth visiting for its mix of gentle and thrilling rides. Big Apple gives young children their first roller-coaster experience on a green caterpillar train. Runaway Mine Train now runs in fixed cars after earlier spinning versions. Moby’s Revenge offers three water-slide lanes, one a steep straight chute and another a spiral. Air Raid spins riders in a 2024 machine built by Tivoli Manufacturing. Visitors also find Amazonia’s tropical house with poison dart frogs, tarantulas and pythons. Devil’s Island is an 18-hole miniature-golf course over water and through caves. Krazy Congo offers soft play for toddlers, while Gamezone has more than 150 arcade games. The Alona Hotel provides rooms, a glasshouse restaurant and views across Strathclyde Loch.
