Bothwell Bridge Lido

Bothwell Bridge Lido stands beside Bothwell Bridge on the River Clyde in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire. Built in the 1930s, it once offered swimming in the river’s waters. The site included Victorian-style gardens called Lido Gardens. In the early 1980s much of the area was covered by the A725 road. Only fragments of the original lido remain today. The lido is unusual because it used the River Clyde itself for bathing. Its gardens were designed in a Victorian style and remain visible from nearby paths. The Clyde Walkway and National Cycle Route 74 run alongside the road and provide access down to the gardens. Remains of the sandy beach can still be seen beside the river. Visitors today find quiet riverside spots where the lido once stood. The Victorian gardens can be viewed from above along the cycle route. The riverbank shows traces of the old sandy beach. The bridge and surrounding area remain peaceful places to walk. The remains offer a glimpse of the lido’s past without crowds or modern buildings.
