Karlkamp

The Karlkamp is a 3,114-metre peak in the Schobergruppe range of the Austrian Alps. It stands near the village of Heiligenblut am Großglockner and the municipality of Großkirchheim. The mountain shares a ridge with the nearby Hohen Seekamp, which reaches 3,112 metres. Ludwig Purtscheller made the first recorded ascent of both peaks on 3 October 1890. The Karlkamp marks the boundary between two communities in northern Kärnten. Climbers choose between two main routes to reach the summit. The easier option follows the Seekamptörl col, which can be approached from the Elberfelder Hütte. Walkers leave the marked path near the first Langtalsee and cross the Seekampkees glacier to reach the col. From there the route crosses a snowfield, then a series of grassy ledges and slabs before tackling a short rock climb rated II+. The final ridge links the Karlkamp with the Hohen Seekamp, from which both summits are easily gained. A more demanding alternative crosses the same glacier but finishes with a harder climb graded III. The surroundings include the Seekampkees glacier and the Retschitzbach stream that drains the Innerretschitz cirque. East of the Hohen Seekamp lies the Seekamptörl col at 2,922 metres. To the north-west the Vorderseekamp rises to 2,923 metres. The Elberfelder Hütte provides the nearest alpine base, set to the south-west below the Langtalseen lakes. Views from the summit stretch across the Schobergruppe and towards the Hohe Tauern.
