Mittlerer Bretterkopf

The Mittlerer Bretterkopf is a 3 018-metre peak in the Schobergruppe range of the Austrian Alps. It stands in the northern centre of the group on the border between the municipalities of Heiligenblut am Großglockner and Großkirchheim. The mountain forms part of the Bretterköpfe, a trio of summits that includes the Hoher Bretterkopf and the Vorderer Bretterkopf. Its first ascent has never been recorded. North of the Mittlerer Bretterkopf lies the Vorderer Bretterkopf, while the Hoher Bretterkopf rises to the south. A north-west ridge leads from the col between the Mittlerer and Vorderer peaks toward the Langtalköpfe. The peak is rarely climbed, but experienced mountaineers seek it for its quiet ridges and dramatic views. The usual route follows the Seekamptörl from the Elberfelder Hütte, then crosses the Hoher Bretterkopf before descending into a shallow col and ascending earth-scoured slabs to the summit. The same ridge can be followed on to the Vorderer Bretterkopf, or the traverse can be made in reverse from the Bretterscharte. The approach from the Gradental valley also joins the ridge system. On the summit visitors look across the Schobergruppe’s jagged skyline and down into the Außerretschitz-Kar and the Gradenbach valley. To the west the Seekampkees glacier feeds the Vorderer Langtalsee, its meltwater glinting in the afternoon light. The Elberfelder Hütte, the nearest alpine base, offers a final glimpse of civilisation before the long approach begins.
