St George's Church, Gravesend

St George’s Church stands near the bottom of Gravesend High Street in the Borough of Gravesham. It is an Anglican parish church dedicated to Saint George and is listed Grade II*. The church belongs to the diocese of Rochester in Kent. Gravesend High Street runs past its front door. The church holds the grave of Pocahontas, who died in Gravesend in 1617 at about twenty-one. She was buried beneath the chancel, though the rebuilding of 1731 lost the exact spot. A bronze statue by William Ordway Partridge marks her memory. Jacobite prisoners from the Battle of Culloden died aboard prison hulks on the Thames and were buried as unknowns in the old unconsecrated part of the churchyard. One of these was Father Alexander Cameron, a Roman Catholic military chaplain and younger brother of Donald Cameron of Lochiel. Visitors see the church itself and the statue of Pocahontas outside. The chancel area recalls her burial. The old cemetery still holds the unmarked graves of the Jacobite prisoners. The High Street offers shops and cafés nearby. The River Thames is a short walk away.
