The Flakturm in Volkspark Humboldthain stands in Berlin’s northern district of Wedding. It is one of three surviving wartime Flaktürme built after Hitler’s September 1940 order. Each tower had two parts: a Leit­turm for radar and gun direction and a Geschützturm for the heavy anti-aircraft guns. The Humboldthain complex was finished in 1942 and still shows the scars of war. These towers are worth the journey because they mark a turning point in Berlin’s air-defence history. The Royal Air Force first bombed the city in August 1940, prompting the Führer’s immediate building programme. The Humboldthain Flakturm was part of a network that stretched to Hamburg and Vienna by 1942. Its surviving walls give a clear picture of how the towers worked together. Visitors find a massive concrete structure rising above the park’s trees. The Geschützturm’s gun emplacements are still visible, while the Leit­turm’s upper platform offers a wide view across the city. Paths wind through the park, leading to information boards that explain the tower’s role. The contrast between the green park and the grey wartime relic makes the visit striking.
