Eimsbüttel is a quarter in the Eimsbüttel borough of Hamburg, Germany. It covers 3.2 square kilometres and has a population density of nearly 17,000 people per square kilometre. The quarter borders Sternschanze, which was created in 2008 from part of its area. In 2006 about 54,700 people lived here, with 10.6 per cent under eighteen and 16.2 per cent aged sixty-five or older. The quarter recognises a wide mix of residents. In 1999 more than sixty per cent of households were single-person, while 12.3 per cent included children under eighteen. Services reflect this diversity: there are eight primary schools, three secondary schools, fifty-two day-care centres and 202 doctors in private practice. Public transport is provided by the city’s underground railway system. Eimsbüttel’s streets are lined with a mix of apartment buildings and small shops. The area has sixteen pharmacies and 16,871 private cars registered among its residents. Traffic accidents numbered 244 in one year, with 205 involving personal injury. Despite the density, the quarter remains a calm residential district close to central Hamburg.
