Eggberg

The Eggberg rises above Bad Säckingen in the Black Forest foothills. It is a modest summit crowned by two modern structures: a 68-metre steel lattice tower that carries television and radio aerials for the Südwestrundfunk, and the upper reservoir of the Bad Säckingen pumped-storage hydroelectric plant. The mountain’s slopes are covered with mixed woodland and open meadows, giving it a quiet, rural feel despite its technical uses. The Eggberg is best known for the Historische Eggbergrennen, an annual hill-climb for classic cars that draws entrants from across Europe. The event turns the quiet lanes into a stage for pre-war Bugattis, 1960s Porsches and other vintage machinery. The television mast, meanwhile, is one of the region’s most visible landmarks, broadcasting programmes to thousands of homes in Baden-Württemberg. Visitors who walk the forest paths find wide views over the High Rhine valley and the Swiss Alps on clear days. The reservoir’s concrete walls and the steel tower stand out against the green slopes, while the old race route winds through beech woods and past farmsteads. The contrast between the historic cars, the modern mast and the natural landscape makes the Eggberg a place where technology and tradition meet.
