Nördliche Göriacher Röte

The Nördliche Göriacher Röte is a 3,011-metre peak in the Frosnitzkamm range of the Venedigergruppe, part of the Hohe Tauern National Park in East Tyrol. It stands on the border between the municipalities of Matrei in Osttirol and Virgen, with the Virger Nordkette forming its northern boundary. Nearby summits include the Südliche Göriacher Röte to the south-east and the Mittereggspitze to the east, separated by the Firschnitzscharte col. The long northern ridge leads over the Fritschnitzscharte and Fritschnitzkopf towards the Hohen Fenster. The peak was first climbed on 27 July 1905 by I. Hechenbleikner and E. Franzelin, and remains a classic mountaineering objective. Approaches start from the Virger hamlets of Marin or Mellitz, both in the Virgental valley. The normal route follows the Firschnitzbach stream before turning right into a notch on the west ridge, graded II. An alternative line from the Zedlacher Alm tackles the north ridge via gullies and chimneys, also graded II. From the summit, the view stretches across the Hohe Tauern peaks and deep into the surrounding valleys. The Frischnitzkees glacier lies on the east face between the Nördliche Göriacher Röte and the Bretterspitze, feeding the Frischnitzbach. The Bonn-Matreier-Hütte provides the closest refuge, while the nearest settlements are the Virger hamlets of Marin and Mellitz below.
