Israelitischer Friedhof Wiener Neustadt

The Jewish cemetery in Wiener Neustadt stands beside the main road east of the city centre. It was laid out in 1888–89 on a plot bought from the town for 200 gulden. A two-metre wall surrounds the site, and at the entrance two small buildings once housed the gardener and the mortuary. The cemetery holds more than 250 graves from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1940 the town took over the land after the Jewish community was dissolved. During the Second World War the site escaped damage despite heavy bombing nearby. A local clean-up campaign in 2007 followed decades of neglect. Visitors enter through the original gateway flanked by the gardener’s house and the former mortuary. Inside, rows of simple gravestones mark the resting places of families who lived in Wiener Neustadt before the Holocaust. Information panels explain the history of the cemetery and the lives of those buried there.
