Lizumer Reckner

The Lizumer Reckner is the highest mountain in the Tux Alps, standing at 2,886 metres in the Austrian state of Tyrol. It sits near the centre of the range, about twenty kilometres south-east of Innsbruck, within the Lizum Walchen military training area. The mountain overlooks several valleys: the Navis valley to the west, the Schmirn valley to the south-east, and the Wattener Lizum to the east. To the north, a ridge connects it to the Lizumer Sonnenspitze and beyond. Its southern neighbour is the Geier, while the Naviser Reckner lies to the west. The summit block is made of serpentinite embedded in radiolarite, surrounded by Jurassic rocks such as dolomite breccias and kalkschiefer. Below the summit are stone runs left by an ancient rock glacier, with traces of dead ice still visible. The mountain’s position on the edge of the Tauern window exposes Penninic and Helvetic nappes, making it a site of geological interest. The area’s varied rock types reflect a complex history of Alpine formation over millions of years. Climbers usually start from bases like the Naviser Hütte or Peeralm in the Navis valley, or the Junsbergalm in the Tuxertal. The Lizumer Hütte in the Wattener Lizum is another common starting point. From these huts, marked trails lead to the southern foot of the summit block. The final ascent involves some easy climbing and is partly secured as a Klettersteig. In winter, the mountain can be climbed as a ski tour, though access is sometimes restricted due to military exercises in the area.
