Tux Alps

The Tux Alps form a rugged mountain range in the Austrian Central Alps, entirely within Tyrol. They rise between the Inn valley to the north and the Zillertal valley to the south. Their highest point is the Lizumer Reckner at 2,886 metres. The range takes its name from the village of Tux, tucked in a side valley of the Zillertal. Three other ranges border the Tux Alps: the Karwendel to the north, the Stubai Alps to the west and the Zillertal Alps to the south. The Tux Alps are a favoured destination for ski touring and hiking. Five ski resorts operate here, including Glungezer and Lizum im Wattental. Patscherkofel hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976. The range offers long-distance trails such as the Munich to Venice Dream Path and the Eagle Way. Alpine Club huts like the Glungezer Hut and Lizum Hut provide rest for walkers. Visitors find high alpine meadows, steep rock faces and deep valleys. The Lizumer Reckner dominates the skyline between the Wattentaler Lizum and Navisbach valley. Rock faces such as the Kalkwand and Torwand rise above the Wattentaler Lizum. The Tuxer Joch saddle links the Tux Alps to the Zillertal Alps, offering a high crossing. The area’s geology includes quartz-phyllite slates and Mesozoic limestones.
