Burgstall Rappenburg

The Burgstall Rappenburg stands on a spur above the valleys of the Sägbach and Hainenbach streams, east of Stimpfach in Schwäbisch Hall district. It rises about sixty metres above the converging valleys and sits at four hundred and ninety metres above sea level. The site was once a settlement called Rappenburg, now a deserted village. Archaeologists believe the earliest defences may have been a prehistoric ring-wall rather than a medieval castle. No written records from the Middle Ages mention a stone castle here. The earthworks and ditches that remain show the outline of a stronghold built on the flat summit of the spur. Alois Schneider’s 1995 study of castles in the Schwäbisch Hall region describes the surviving ramparts and their likely Iron Age origin. The absence of later masonry suggests the site was abandoned long before the 19th century. Visitors reach the spur by following farm tracks from Stimpfach. The low grassy banks and shallow ditches mark the former perimeter of the ring-wall. From the highest point there are wide views across the surrounding farmland and wooded hills. The quiet fields and distant villages give a sense of the landscape’s long history. The site is best visited in dry weather when the earthworks stand out clearly.
