Pfannenburg

The Pfannenburg was a small hilltop castle on the forested Pfannenberg ridge, about 485 metres above sea level. It stood roughly 2.7 kilometres east of Jagstheim village centre, part of Crailsheim in the Schwäbisch Hall district. The site overlooked the Degenbachsee, a lake created in the 1970s. Only faint earthworks remain of the old defences, including traces of the neck ditch that once protected the approach. The castle’s builders probably added a small ring wall to strengthen the position. After centuries of erosion and tree cover, little else is visible today. Historians recognise the Pfannenburg as one of many modest medieval fortifications in the region. Alois Schneider’s 1995 survey of castles in Schwäbisch Hall lists the site among others built to control local trade routes. The castle’s short life suggests it served a limited purpose before being abandoned. Its remains now lie within a quiet woodland area, far from modern roads. The Degenbachsee below adds a peaceful setting for walkers who reach the ridge. Visitors walk through mixed forest to the Pfannenburg’s former ramparts. The neck ditch appears as a shallow depression cutting across the ridge. Other earthworks show where walls once stood, though no masonry survives. The view eastwards stretches over the lake and surrounding farmland. The site is quiet, with only the sound of wind in the trees and birdsong. It offers a quiet reminder of the region’s medieval past without crowds or modern distractions.
