Burg Waldangelloch

Burg Waldangelloch stands on a 204-metre-high spur above the village of Waldangelloch, part of Sinsheim in the Rhein-Neckar district. Built around 1206 by the Counts of Eberstein, it once formed a five-sided complex with a ring wall and four corner towers. The palace had three storeys and a spiral staircase in a turret, though no keep was ever added. The lords of Angellach lived here until their line died out in the early 17th century. After the Thirty Years’ War Duke Friedrich August of Württemberg-Neuenstadt restored the site in 1685, but it no longer served as a noble residence. By 1860 the buildings were ruinous yet still largely intact. Around 1900 the palace, turret and outbuildings were demolished, though the spiral staircase was saved and reused in a nearby farmhouse. Today only the foundations of the ring wall and two corner towers remain visible. The ground has been levelled and once served as a sports field. Visitors can walk among the low remains and imagine the medieval layout, while the surviving spiral staircase stands in the Buchenauerhof a short distance away.
