Schloss Michelfeld

Schloss Michelfeld is a manor house in the village of Michelfeld, Baden-Württemberg. The present building dates from 1753, replacing an earlier castle destroyed in the Thirty Years’ War. Before that it belonged to the Counts of Katzenelnbogen and later the Lords of Gemmingen. The first written record of the site appears in 1390. The house was rebuilt by the Lords of Gemmingen-Hornberg in the mid-18th century. The manor remains in private hands while the surrounding estate buildings now house a restaurant and hotel. In recent years the house has twice suffered fires and twice been restored. The restoration work has returned both interior and exterior to their former condition. Guests can therefore stay in a building that looks much as it did when first completed. Visitors find a quiet country setting beside the Angelbach stream. The manor’s pale walls and slate roofs sit among mature trees and lawns. Inside, the restored rooms show fine plasterwork and joinery from the 18th century. The restaurant serves local dishes in rooms that once formed part of the estate’s working farm. Outside, a short riverside path leads to the village church and back through orchards.
