Newman University

Birmingham Newman University stands on a 19-hectare site in Bartley Green, twelve kilometres south-west of the city centre. The campus overlooks Bartley Reservoir and is built around a series of quadrangles. Buildings bear the names of local historical figures and places linked to John Henry Newman. The university began in 1968 as a teacher-training college under the first principal, Simon Quinlan, and vice-principal Joe Blackledge. It opened with 182 students and later gained independence from validating bodies. In 2008 it became Newman University College, then Newman University in 2013, and Birmingham Newman University in 2023. The university is worth the journey for its strong reputation in teacher education and its widening range of courses. It has the third highest working-class intake and the second highest state-school intake in the UK. Nearly one-third of students are mature learners. The campus holds a Gold Eco Campus award and has invested in modern facilities. A £20 million development added the St Chad Building and new library in 2013. The Sports Centre includes Olympic lifting platforms and an all-weather pitch opened by former Aston Villa striker Darius Vassell. Visitors find a calm campus with shaded quadrangles and named buildings. St Mary’s Chapel at the centre offers quiet spaces and chaplaincy support. The Sanctuary refectory serves meals, while the Senses Bar and Atrium café provide snacks and coffee. The Newman Health and Wellbeing Centre offers counselling to students and local residents. Artworks such as ‘The Globe’ by Planet Art stand around the site. The Cofton Halls of Residence provide modern accommodation, and the reservoir offers a scenic backdrop.
