Church of Our Lady and St Rose of Lima

The Church of Our Lady and St Rose of Lima stands in the Weoley Castle area of Birmingham, a Roman Catholic parish in the Archdiocese of Birmingham. The building was designed by Adrian Gilbert Scott and completed in 1961. Its High Altar uses Blue Horton Stone from Banbury with an Italian Grey Marble top. The Lady Altar features a carved wooden reredos by Ferdinando Stuflesser from Bolzano, Italy. The church seats 500 people and was blessed by Archbishop Francis Grimshaw on Whit Monday 1961. The church’s history began with a parish hall in 1933, designed by George Bernard Cox. A school followed in 1936, and services were held there until the church was built. The foundation stone for the church was laid in 1959, and construction cost £75,000. Though not nationally listed, it holds a Grade A local listing from 2013. Inside, the church combines modern design with traditional craftsmanship. The Blue Horton Stone and Italian Grey Marble create a striking High Altar. The Lady Altar’s wooden reredos adds intricate detail to the space. The building remains a place of worship and community focus in Weoley Castle.
