Sheffield Theatres

Sheffield Theatres stands in the heart of South Yorkshire as the largest regional theatre complex outside London. It brings together four separate stages under one roof: the Crucible, the Lyceum, the Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse, and the Montgomery Theatre. Each venue hosts its own programme of plays, musicals, and touring shows throughout the year. The complex began life in the early 1970s under artistic director Colin George. Since then it has been led by a succession of directors including Clare Venables, Michael Grandage, and Daniel Evans. Today Elizabeth Newman guides the programme forward. The theatres are recognised for producing bold new work as well as reviving classics. In 2006 Sheffield Theatres marked Harold Pinter’s seventieth birthday with “Pinter: A Celebration”. Over a month audiences saw seven of his plays staged in sequence. Screenings of Pinter’s screenplays and documentaries accompanied the stage productions. Conversations featured Penelope Wilton and Douglas Hodge in dialogue with critic Michael Billington. A cricket event, a quiz night, and a reading of Pinter’s Nobel Prize lecture broadened the festival further. The season showed how one playwright’s voice can shape a whole programme. A visit to Sheffield Theatres offers a chance to explore two main auditoriums. The Crucible seats over nine hundred and stages large-scale productions. The Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse is smaller and hosts more intimate performances. Between shows visitors can walk the foyers and see displays about past productions. The Lyceum and Montgomery theatres sit nearby, adding variety to the complex. The whole site sits close to Sheffield’s city centre, making it easy to combine theatre with shops and cafés.
