Crewkerne and District Museum and Heritage Centre

Crewkerne and District Museum sits in the Somerset town of Crewkerne, in a restored 18th-century house that once formed part of the local flax trade. The museum opened in 2000 after grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund and three local councils restored the building. It shares the site with archives and a meeting room, making it a small but active heritage centre. The displays show how Crewkerne grew in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially through linen and flax work. Visitors find coins and medals, costumes and textiles, fine art, and local archaeology. A temporary exhibition in 2010 brought Treasures from the Earth, with Roman coins and brooches from Crewkerne itself. Beyond the permanent rooms, the museum keeps archives and hosts events. Nearby mosaics at Lopen and Dinnington appear in photographs and notes. The building stands as a quiet record of the town’s past, open to anyone who wants to trace its history.
