Church of St George, Hinton St George

The Church of St George stands in the quiet village of Hinton St George, Somerset. Built in the 13th century, it shows work by masons from Wells Cathedral. The church has a Grade I listing for its historic importance. Its four-stage tower dates from 1485–95 and has corner buttresses and battlemented parapets. A weathervane was added in 1756 by Thomas Bagley of Bridgwater. A hexagonal stair turret rises from the south-east corner of the tower. The church contains the Paulet mausoleum, where several Earl Poulett family tombs lie. An effigy of Sir Amias Paulet, once in St Martin-in-the-Fields, was moved here. Restoration between 2007 and 2014 repaired corroded ironwork inside the tombs. The list of burials includes Hugh Paulet, John Poulett the first Baron, and later Earls up to the fourth. The tower’s parapet shows a carved date of 1731, suggesting later decorative work. Visitors find a church with little sign of multiple building phases, though repairs are visible. The north side tracery was marked out but never cut. The tower’s two upper stages have two-light mullioned windows with transoms and traceries. A clockface sits below the east window. The interior holds the hexagonal stair turret and the Paulet memorial with its historic effigy. The setting remains a peaceful Somerset village.
