Pfarrkirche hl. Florian in Viktring, Klagenfurt

The parish church of St Florian stands on a low hill in the Stein district of Klagenfurt’s Viktring quarter. It is surrounded by a walled cemetery whose oldest graves date back to the 19th century. The building itself rises above the graves, its white plaster walls catching the light of the Wörthersee basin. The church began as a small Romanesque chapel gifted by Count Bernhard of Spanheim in the 1140s. After a period as a farm building, it was rebuilt in the 13th century and enlarged in the 18th century under the abbot of nearby Viktring Abbey. The Baroque nave and onion-domed tower were finished between 1762 and 1773. The interior was decorated by local craftsmen, including the sculptor Benedikt Pläß and the painter Eustachius Gabriel. Inside, the late-Rococo furnishings include a high altar carved by Pläß and painted by Gabriel. The ceiling shows the martyrdom of St Florian, the church’s patron. Four bells hang in the tower, the oldest cast in 1521. Outside, the cemetery holds bronze busts and war memorials that recall the region’s 20th-century conflicts.
