Viktring Abbey

Viktring Abbey stands in the southern outskirts of Klagenfurt, Carinthia, on land once given by Count Bernhard of Spanheim-Marburg and his wife Kunigunde. Founded in 1142 by Cistercian monks from Villers-Bettnach, it became a daughter house of Morimond. The abbey church was dedicated in 1202 by Eberhard of Regensburg, Archbishop of Salzburg. Among its abbots, John of Viktring became a noted chronicler and confidant of Duke Henry of Bohemia. In 1411 a fire destroyed much of the monastery, but rebuilding followed under a decree of the Cistercian General Chapter. After suppression in 1786, the church and rectory became a parish. The Moro brothers bought part of the site in 1788 and opened a textile factory. By 1816 Emperor Francis I visited with his wife Caroline Augusta, and later Franz Joseph came in 1850 and 1852. The factory expanded until 1897, when the Moro family owned the entire monastery. After changing hands several times, the buildings were bought by the Austrian government in 1970. In 1977 a secondary school opened, becoming an independent music-focused grammar school in 1980. The BRG Klagenfurt-Viktring celebrated its official opening in 1999. Visitors find the former abbey church with its historic furnishings and the adjacent rectory. The Baroque interior reflects the rebuilding after the 1411 fire. The school occupies the former monastery wings, where classrooms and music rooms now stand. A small park surrounds the complex, offering quiet walks among mature lime and chestnut trees. The parish continues to use the church for services and concerts. The site remains a place where history, education and local life intersect.
