Edinburgh Napier University

Edinburgh Napier University stands on three city campuses in Edinburgh. Merchiston, the oldest, occupies the restored Merchiston Castle, once home to John Napier, the 16th-century mathematician. Craiglockhart uses the former hydropathic hospital where First World War poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon were treated. Sighthill, opened in 2011, houses clinical skills labs and a sports facility that hosts the Scottish Rugby Academy. The university is recognised twice with the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for work in sustainable construction and timber engineering. Its schools cover subjects from nursing and computing to film and music. The Screen Academy Scotland, supported by figures such as Judi Dench, trains the next generation of screen talent. At Merchiston, students work in professional music studios and a broadcast journalism newsroom opened by alumna Lorraine Kelly. Craiglockhart displays photography, writing and memorabilia linked to the war poets. Sighthill offers a biomechanics lab and an environmental chamber that simulates high-altitude conditions. Each campus reflects Edinburgh’s mix of heritage buildings and modern facilities.
