Tynecastle Park

Tynecastle Park stands in the Gorgie district of Edinburgh, a football stadium that has been the home of Heart of Midlothian since 1886. The ground occupies a compact site between narrow streets and the North British Distillery buildings. It has hosted Scotland internationals and major cup semi-finals, holding 19,852 seated spectators. The stadium began as a simple pitch in 1881 before moving to its present location five years later. Hearts played their first Scottish League match here in 1890, losing 5–0 to Celtic. The ground has seen international matches, world championship games and domestic cup finals over the decades. The stadium’s history reflects the club’s fortunes and the city’s growth. In 1914 a grandstand designed by Archibald Leitch replaced earlier wooden structures, paid for partly by the British record sale of Percy Dawson. The record attendance of 53,396 was set in 1932 for a Scottish Cup tie against Rangers. After the Second World War, Tynecastle became Scotland’s first all-concrete stadium, with floodlights added in 1957. Safety regulations in the 1970s reduced capacity, and later redevelopments replaced terraces with seated stands. Visitors find a modern stadium arranged around four sides. The Main Stand houses club facilities and overlooks the pitch from the west. The Wheatfield Stand and Roseburn Stand flank the northern and eastern sides, while the Gorgie Stand closes the southern end. The pitch is surrounded by continuous seating, creating an intimate atmosphere. The stadium retains its industrial setting, with distillery buildings visible beyond the ground. Matchdays bring fans through turnstiles on Wheatfield Street and along Gorgie Road, where the club’s history is written into the streets.
