Laing Art Gallery

The Laing Art Gallery stands on New Bridge Street West in Newcastle upon Tyne. Designed in the Baroque style with Art Nouveau touches by architects Cackett & Burns Dick, it opened in 1904. The building is Grade II listed and was paid for by a gift from local wine merchant Alexander Laing. In front of the gallery lies the Blue Carpet, a public space often used for events. The gallery is now managed by North East Museums and supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The collection includes paintings, watercolours and decorative objects such as Newcastle silver. Glassworks by William Beilby from the 1880s are displayed alongside ceramics like Maling pottery. Works by John Martin, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Edward Burne-Jones and William Holman Hunt form part of the permanent display. The gallery also holds paintings by Ben Nicholson and Ralph Hedley, who captured scenes of local life. A strong selection of 18th- and 19th-century watercolours features pieces by J. M. W. Turner and John Sell Cotman. Inside, visitors find rotating exhibitions that keep the displays fresh. The main galleries showcase dramatic works such as Martin’s The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Smaller rooms focus on watercolours and drawings, offering quieter spaces for closer study. The building’s mix of historic architecture and modern displays creates an engaging atmosphere. Outside, the Blue Carpet provides a place to pause before or after viewing the art.
