Northumbria University

Northumbria University stands in Newcastle upon Tyne, a public research university with origins in a college founded in 1877. It has two main campuses in the city and one in London, plus an international campus in Amsterdam. The university organises its work into four faculties covering arts, business, engineering and health. It has about thirty thousand students and was rated twenty-third in the UK for research power in 2021. The university began as three colleges that merged in 1969 to form Newcastle Polytechnic. In 1992 it became Northumbria University, later gaining responsibility for training healthcare professionals. In 2022 it was named UK University of the Year by Times Higher Education for its transformation into a research-intensive institution. The university also faced a fine in 2017 after a safety failure in a sports-science experiment. City Campus East and West sit either side of the central motorway, linked by a bridge opened in 2008. East campus houses the law, design and business schools, while West campus includes the library, students’ union and Sport Central. Sport Central is a £30 million arena with facilities for swimming, running and climbing, seating more than two thousand eight hundred spectators. The Sutherland Building, once a naval warehouse, now contains studios for architecture students. Coach Lane Campus, four kilometres outside the city, serves health and life-science programmes with sports pitches and a fitness suite.
