The Macallan distillery

The Macallan distillery stands beside the River Spey in Craigellachie, Moray, a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky producer. Founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, it began as a farm distillery and took its name from the Gaelic for ‘fertile ground by the stream’. The site grew around traditional methods, using oak sherry casks from Jerez for decades. In 2004 it introduced the Fine Oak series, adding bourbon casks to the mix, later renamed the Triple Cask Matured range. Ownership passed from Highland Distillers to Edrington in 1999, giving the distillery financial strength to expand. Macallan is among the world’s best-selling single malts, regularly ranked alongside Glenfiddich and Glenlivet. Its whiskies matured only in sherry oak once defined its reputation, but the Fine Oak and Triple Cask ranges broadened the style. The distillery holds auction records: a 1926 bottle sold for $54,000 in 2007, and a 64-year-old in a Lalique decanter reached $460,000 in 2010. A 1926 sold for £2.1 million in 2023, making it the most expensive whisky ever auctioned. Its new £140 million visitor centre, designed by Norman Foster, opened in 2018 and won major architecture awards. Visitors walk through a modern glass-and-stone building set into the Speyside landscape. Inside, thirty-six stills—twelve wash and twenty-four spirit—stand in gleaming copper. The centre traces the distillery’s history from farm beginnings to global fame. Guests see casks from Jerez and Kentucky, smell sherry and bourbon notes, and taste expressions from the 12-year-old Sherry Oak to rare 78-year-old releases. Outside, rolling hills and the river frame the estate, linking whisky-making to its fertile origins.
