St Margaret's Episcopal Church and Burial Ground, Aberlour

St Margaret’s Episcopal Church stands at the end of a long drive on rising ground above Aberlour’s High Street, surrounded by secluded woodland. Built between 1875 and 1879 to a Gothic design, it is a large cruciform building of tooled pink granite with ashlar detailing. A slender octagonal spire rises at the south-west corner, and a gabled porch below carries the inscription ‘This is none other but the house of God.’ The church has a nave with side aisles, transepts to north and south, and a narrower chancel at the east end. The interior is richly decorated with polished granite columns, ornate capitals, and a tiled nave floor. Stained glass windows by G. J. Baguley depict saints and biblical scenes, and the chancel contains Caen stone sedilia, reredos, and altar by Dawson & Strachan. A brass tabernacle and sanctuary lamp were made by J. W. Singer and Sons, while the pulpit came from Inverness craftsmen. The west end holds a font with a carved cover salvaged from a demolished London church. Outside, a walled burial ground contains foundation stones from the former orphanage and a war memorial to boys who died in the world wars. The orphanage itself has gone, leaving only its clocktower in a nearby memorial garden. The church remains in weekly use for Sunday services at ten o’clock.
