Turmhügel Burgrasen

The Turmhügel Burgrasen is a vanished motte castle standing about 200 metres west-north-west of Plesten village centre. Plesten belongs to Neustadt bei Coburg in Upper Franconia. The site once held a wooden tower raised on an earthen mound surrounded by a ditch. Excavations show the mound measured roughly twenty metres across. No traces of stonework remain above ground today. Historians recognise it as one of many small medieval strongholds built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Records mention a local noble family, the von Schaumburg, who controlled the area at the time. The motte’s position on a gentle slope gave it a clear view over the surrounding farmland. After the 14th century the castle fell out of use and was gradually levelled. Visitors find a low, grass-covered mound about two metres high. A shallow depression marks where the tower once stood. The site lies beside a field track leading from Plesten towards the woods. A wooden sign explains the history in simple terms. From the top there is a wide view across rolling farmland to the wooded hills beyond.
