Gestungshausen Castle

The Turmhügel Gestungshausen stands in Gestungshausen, a village that now belongs to the municipality of Sonnefeld in Upper Franconia. It was once a small castle built on an artificial mound, a type known as a motte. The motte was surrounded by a ditch and an earthen rampart, typical of such fortifications from the Middle Ages. Today nothing remains above ground of the former stronghold. The site is recognised as an archaeological monument in Bavaria. Records from the 19th century describe the mound and its surrounding earthworks. Archaeologists have studied the layout and the small finds recovered from the area. Their work shows how the motte once controlled a local route through the Itz valley. Visitors walk across a quiet field where the mound once rose. The ground is flat now, but the outline of the old ramparts can still be traced. A single information board marks the spot and explains what stood there centuries ago. The surrounding farmland stretches away, giving a sense of the landscape the builders chose for their stronghold.
