Meall Gorm

Meall Gorm is a Munro standing 949 metres above sea level in the Fannich range of the Scottish Highlands. Its Gaelic name means ‘blue mountain’, and it lies about fifty kilometres northwest of Inverness. The ridge runs for roughly 1.5 kilometres from northwest to southeast, linking the main peak with lower tops and passes. Walkers often include Meall Gorm in a round of the Fannich Munros, usually tackling Sgùrr Mòr and Beinn Liath Mhòr Fannaich as well. The usual start is the small car park at Torrandhu Bridge on the A835. From there the route follows unnamed burns up the eastern flanks to the east ridge of Beinn Liath Mhòr Fannaich before joining the main ridge. Another approach begins at Fannich Lodge on Loch Fannich, reached by a private track suitable only for mountain bikes. The summit itself is a broad plateau with a small cairn marking the highest point. North-east of the summit are steep corries holding small lochs such as Loch Lì and Loch an Eilein. A second top, 922 metres high, stands about a kilometre to the south-east, and beyond it the ridge continues down to the Bealach Bàn pass. The south-west side of the mountain falls in broad grass and heather slopes towards Coire Beag and Coire Riabhach, while the north-east face drops sharply into rocky gullies and lochans.
