Roggspitze

The Roggspitze is a striking three-sided mountain standing at 2,747 metres on the border between Tirol and Vorarlberg. It belongs to the Valluga group in the western Lechtal Alps, its steep southern and eastern walls giving it a commanding presence over the valleys to the north. The name comes from the old Rhaeto-Romanic word for rock, Rocca, reflecting the solid Aptychenkalk limestone that makes the peak popular with climbers. Climbers value the Roggspitze for its accessible routes up to UIAA grade VI and the fact that it was first reached in 1877 by the local herdsman Martin Josef Zudrell from the Pazieltal. The normal route leaves from the Stuttgarter Hütte at 2,305 metres, following the western Erlispitze north ridge before descending to the southern Roggscharte and ascending the Roggspitze’s north ridge. The whole tour takes about two hours and offers variations such as the Black Gully for the descent. From the summit the Valluga, Trittkopf and two Erlispitzen appear close by, while to the east the ground drops steeply into the Almajur valley. The Robert-Bosch-Weg trail runs below the western flanks, linking the Stuttgarter and Ulmer huts across high alpine meadows.
