Burgstall Burschel

The Burgstall Burschel is a ruined medieval nobleman’s stronghold in Mittelfranken, Bavaria. It stands on the Auer Berg, a long ridge rising 516 metres above the valleys of the Thalach and Schwarzach rivers. The site once covered nearly seven hectares, protected by a prehistoric ring-wall that enclosed the whole plateau. A U-shaped ditch now separates the former castle area from the rest of the ridge. Only fragments remain: low foundations of walls, a possible tower base nine metres wide, and traces of an inner dividing wall. The castle’s commanding position let its owners control a key trade route between Ansbach and Regensburg. Archaeologists have found Iron Age graves and Bronze Age settlements nearby, showing the hill was occupied long before the medieval builders arrived. Written records begin in the 12th century, when the lords of nearby Höbing used the site as their local seat. During the Magyar raids of the 10th century it may have sheltered surrounding villagers. Today the surviving ditch is still four to five metres deep, and the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection lists the whole area as a protected archaeological site. Visitors walk along the grassy plateau where the ring-wall once stood. The U-shaped ditch cuts across the southern edge, its steep sides still visible. Inside, low stone lines mark where buildings once stood, including the probable main hall and a round tower base. A short distance east, the remains of a small chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas survive in overgrown earthworks. From the plateau’s edge there are wide views across the Thalach valley and towards the distant Kuhberg. The quiet hilltop, once a place of refuge, now offers a clear picture of medieval life in the region.
