St Anne's Church, St Anne's-on-the-Sea

St Anne’s Church stands on the Fylde coast in Lancashire, a town built around the building itself. It is an active Anglican parish church in the Diocese of Blackburn, designed in a mixed Gothic style with red brick and sandstone. The church began as a chapel of ease in 1872–73, one of the first structures in what became St Anne’s-on-the-Sea. Local landowners, the Clifton family, donated the site for its construction. Lancaster architects Paley and Austin drew up the plans and oversaw the work at a cost of £4,229. The church grew over time, with additions such as a transept, vestry, aisle, tower, lady chapel and baptistry added by successive architects. The church is worth visiting for its architectural importance and its place in local history. It became an independent parish in 1877, giving its name to the growing seaside resort. Richard Knill Freeman enlarged the building in 1885–86, and Henry Paley added the baptistry in 1919. English Heritage granted it Grade II listed status in 1993, recognising its national importance. The churchyard contains memorials to the crew lost in the 1886 lifeboat disaster and the grave of footballer and manager Harry Catterick. The lychgate and boundary wall also hold Grade II designation. Inside, the church has a nave and chancel under one roof, with aisles, transepts and a west tower. The organ chamber features brick and basketwork detailing, while the lady chapel contains a Caen stone reredos. Stained glass windows include work by John Hayward and by E. H. Jewitt of Shrigley and Hunt. The churchyard is triangular, enclosed by a red brick wall and entered through a Tudor-style timber lychgate. The building’s red-tiled roofs and sandstone dressings stand out against the coastal setting.
