Loch Dìonaird

Loch Dìonaird is a freshwater loch in the Durness parish of Sutherland, Highland. It lies in the north-western Highlands about six kilometres south of Polla. The loch sits 357 feet above sea level, higher than many surrounding peaks, making it a natural gathering point for mountain streams. The loch collects water from several rivers and burns, including the Allt an Eassain Ghil, which flows from An Dubh-Loch and Lochan Ulbha near peaks such as Sabhal Mòr and Meall Horn. The River Dionard carries water from the loch to the Kyle of Durness and the Atlantic. The river also supplies water to settlements like Gualin House, Carbreck and Lairg. Visitors find a quiet landscape of cottages, fishing spots and heritage paths around the loch. The area remains remote, with only narrow gravel tracks leading in from Alltnacaillich or a dirt track from the River Dionard’s banks. Despite nearby Loch Awe, Loch Dìonaird stays isolated, offering solitude and unspoilt scenery.
