Glen Eagles

Glen Eagles is a glen in Perth and Kinross that cuts through the Ochil Hills, joining Glen Devon to form a pass. Its name comes from the Gaelic for ‘church glen’, recalling the chapel and well of Saint Mungo raised as a memorial to the Haldane family. The glen’s northern entrance is marked by Gleneagles House, a 1750 extension to a 17th-century building reached by lime trees planted after the Battle of Camperdown. Little of the early 16th-century Gleneagles Castle remains, only traces of the Haldanes’ tower house. The Caledonian Railway borrowed the glen’s name for a hotel and golf course built farther away near Auchterarder. The glen’s link to the Gleneagles Hotel is strengthened by the station on the Perth–Stirling line, once called Crieff Junction. The hotel became known worldwide when it hosted the 31st G8 summit in July 2005. The railway company chose the name to draw on the glen’s quiet reputation, even though the buildings stand some distance from the pass. The station still serves trains between Perth and Stirling, keeping the glen’s name alive on the map. The Haldane memorial chapel and well remain part of the estate’s history. Visitors walk the glen’s paths beneath the Ochil Hills, seeing the lime avenue that leads to Gleneagles House. The ruined castle site shows fragments of the 16th-century tower, while the restored chapel recalls Saint Mungo. From the glen’s far end there is a view toward the Gleneagles Hotel, set against the Perthshire landscape. The railway station sits quietly on the edge of Auchterarder, a reminder of the line that once shaped the area’s fame. The glen itself stays unchanged, a green pass through the hills carrying its old Gaelic name.
