DDR-Museum Zeitreise

The DDR Museum Zeitreise was a private exhibition in Radebeul, a town in Saxony near Dresden. It occupied a four-storey building in socialist architectural style, once the offices of a state energy-equipment firm. The museum covered more than 3 500 square metres and displayed 60 000 everyday objects alongside 140 vehicles. Visitors found forty themed sections tracing daily life in the German Democratic Republic. The ground floor showed cars and public transport from brands such as Simson, MZ and IFA. The second floor examined factories and working conditions, while the third illustrated housing, leisure and culture with items like WBS 70 flats and typical sideboards. The top floor explained the vanished state system. A large hall hosted cultural events for up to four hundred people. An in-house café recreated the atmosphere of DDR-era cafés. In 2011 the American actor Tom Hanks visited during filming in Saxony.
