Bennoschlösschen

The Bennoschlösschen stands in Radebeul’s Oberlößnitz district, a former wine-growing village now surrounded by vineyards. The two-storey Renaissance manor sits on the Unterberg slope in the Radebeuler Goldener Wagen vineyard, between Bennostraße and Weinbergstraße. Its almost square footprint and four gables point to the cardinal directions, while a massive buttress props the south-west corner. The house matters because it is the oldest surviving manor in Oberlößnitz and one of Radebeul’s most notable country seats. First recorded on Matthias Oeder’s map around 1580, it was built by Hans Harrer, chamberlain to Elector August of Saxony. Its timber roof frame uses only traditional carpentry joints, and the building appears in both Gurlitt’s 1904 and Dehio’s 1905 inventories. Inside the high-walled vineyard you find the square manor with tiny shuttered windows and a later two-storey north wing added by the Ziller brothers in 1896. The surrounding slopes once held the Rote Presse communal wine press; today the land is again planted with vines and leased to the Hoflößnitz estate. Restoration completed in 1992 returned the gables to their original form.
